What are the recommended hardware and browser specifications for this program?

For PCs, we recommend using a computer running Windows 98 or later with at least a Pentium III processor, 64 MB of RAM, at least a quad-speed CD-ROM drive, a video display set to display at least 800 x 600 pixels, and a sound card with speakers. You must also have Internet Explorer 5.5 or later and Windows Media Player 7.0 or later.

For the Macintosh, a PowerPC is recommended, along with System 8 or later, at least 64 MB of RAM, and a quad-speed CD-ROM drive. For your browser, you need Internet Explorer 5 or later and QuickTime 5 or later.

The software you need is available on the CD-ROM. Run the software installer appropriate for your machine from the CD.

You can download the latest version of Internet Explorer from Microsoft.com and the most recent version of Windows Media Player at http://www.microsoft.com/windows.mediaplayer/en/default.asp. Check www.apple.com/quicktime/download for the most recent version of QuickTime.

When I click on the encyclopedia links, I can't get to their site.

Check your connection to the Internet. If you have a dial-up connection, make sure you have dialed onto your Internet Service Provider.

When I mouse over a menu and then change my mind about clicking on a menu item, how do I get the dropdown menu to close?

Click your mouse to one side or the other of the menu dropdown.

Why aren't the dropdown menus responding to my selections?

Make sure to click on the actual text of your selection when navigating with the dropdown menus. Clicking in the surrounding area will cause the menu to respond without linking to your selection.

If I refresh my browser while I'm watching a video or use the "back" button to navigate through the program, sometimes the blue boxes at the right get scrambled.

This is a periodic bug in Internet Explorer. Selecting a video lesson from the dropdown menu will correct this.

If I click on the video window, it stops playing. How do I restart it?

Click on the video window again.

I took a quiz earlier, but when I logged back in, my results weren't saved.

Are you a Mac user? Your results may have been erased to allow another user's quiz results to be saved. See the Note for Macintosh Users in the "Quizzes" section for more information.

If I create a Custom Presentation for my students to use, do I have to reveal my login name so they can access it?

You do not. Custom Presentations are machine-specific, not user-specific; they will appear in the presentation list whenever any user runs the program on the same machine they were originally created on. Just make sure your students know the name of your Custom Presentation and which computer to access it from.

I created a Custom Presentation that includes a quiz, but when I play it back, the questions have already been answered. How do I get rid of these answers?

Once you have taken a quiz under any username, the program remembers your quiz scores so that you are not able to retake the quiz. If you have taken a quiz under the username you use to view the Custom Presentation, your answers will display within the presentation. To view your presentation without answers, simply log in under a new username.

The help file says to run this program in Internet Explorer, but when I launch the program, it automatically opens in Netscape instead. Why is this happening and what should I do?

The machine you are using may have set Netscape as its default browser. In this case, any time you launch a browser file (.htm) your computer will automatically open Netscape, even though this program prefers Internet Explorer.

There are two ways to address this problem. First, you can open Internet Explorer manually. Then, under the File menu, select "Open File." In this window, locate the CD-ROM and select the start.htm file. Once the program launches, add the opening page to your list of favorites. The next time you use the program you can just select the favorite to start the program (make sure the CD-ROM is in the drive when you do so).

If you need to install Internet Explorer, you can use the installer provided on the CD-ROM.

Second, you could try to set Internet Explorer as the default browser on that machine. This can be a complicated procedure and may interfere with other users' settings.

So, how do I make Internet Explorer my default browser?

PC users: Under the Tools menu select Internet Options. Click the "Program" tab. Check the box at the lower left that says, "Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser." Close the browser and then launch it again. You'll get a dialog box that says "Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?" Click Yes.

Mac users: Under the Apple menu, select the Control Panels folder and find the Internet control panel. Click the "Web" tab. At the bottom, where it says "Default Web browser," select the "Internet Explorer" option. If you have just installed the program, it may not be available from the menu. In this case, select "Select" and use the window to navigate to the application file.

How do I turn on cookies?

If you have just installed your browser or are using the default settings, cookies will already be turned on. If you're not sure, here's how to check your cookie settings in Internet Explorer.

For PC users, select Tools->Internet Options and click the Security tab. On the Security tab, click the Custom Level button. Scroll to the "Cookies" section in the Settings window and confirm that the Enable option is selected for all cookie types.

For Macintosh users, select Edit->Preferences and choose cookies from the left-hand menu. Make sure the option next to "when receiving cookies" is NOT set to "never accept."

How do I delete cookies?

For PC users, open the Windows Explorer application and navigate to the C:\Windows\Cookies folder on your hard drive (where C is the letter assigned to your computer's primary hard drive). This folder contains all Internet Explorer cookies and can be sorted by name or date. Locate the cookie file you wish to delete (filenames are system dependent) and drag it to your recycle bin or press the delete key.

For Macintosh users, select Edit->Preferences, as above, and choose cookies from the left-hand menu. Select the cookie you wish to delete (the user ID will appear in the "name" column) and click the delete button.

My quiz results e-mail(s) is (are) not being sent/received.

Make sure you are connected to the Internet, as above, and double-check your teacher's e-mail address to make sure you have typed it correctly.

I have received students' quiz results via e-mail, but the columns are out of alignment. How do I correct this?

Set your e-mail program to view the e-mail using a fixed width font (such as Courier). In Microsoft Outlook Express, for instance, within the View menu, go to Text Size and select the "Fixed" option.

Clicking this button takes the user to a page maintained by CLEARVUE & SVE. Here, the user will find pre-approved Web resources, program materials for online use or for download, and more.

Custom Presentations

Accessed from the "Tools" menu, the Custom Presentations option allows you to put the video lessons and quizzes into any order you wish and to save each order with a unique name.

After you give a name to your presentation, a list of available items appears in a list box. Highlight one item at a time and click the "add below" button to add them to your custom list. To remove an item from your list, highlight it and click the "remove" button. As you add or remove items, the total amount of time for the video lessons is shown below your list.

Once an item is in your custom presentation, it may be moved up and down using the arrows at the right.

When you are done, click "save." To edit, run, or delete an existing presentation, click on the "edit/run/delete" link.

This feature relies on cookies, which limits the number of presentations you can create for a program on a single machine to about 15, depending on the contents of the presentation. Since cookies are specific to a particular computer, if you wish to use your presentations on another computer, you will need to rebuild the presentations there. For more information on cookies, see our "Frequently Asked Questions" ("FAQs").

Once you have created and have run your presentation, it becomes the "selected" program. This means that each time you log in under your username, you will enter the program with the presentation you have created ready for playback.

To return to the original program sequence, simply choose the "default" presentation option from the presentation list. The default presentation is simply the original program order, integrating section quizzes at the appropriate points. This presentation cannot be deleted or changed.

Regardless of what presentation is currently selected, you are always free to select any video lesson from the dropdown menu.

Search

Video lesson transcripts, glossary definitions, questions, and an online encyclopedia may be searched using the search box at the left. On the results page, clicking on "Search Encyclopedia" will open a new browser window.

Glossary

This feature is accessed from the "Tools" menu. Clicking on a term will reveal a corresponding definition at the right.

Quizzes

Quizzes are presented to students at the end of each video section. Quizzes may also be accessed directly from the "Quizzes" menu.

Students take the pre-quiz (containing questions from the regular quizzes) when they first enter the program-after. Later in the program, after a student watches video lessons and takes a regular quiz, the results of pre-quiz questions will be displayed next to the corresponding quiz question.

Your browser must have cookies enabled for this feature to work correctly. Because quiz results are stored on the machine where the quiz was taken, to keep quiz scores together users must 1) sign in under the same username and 2) use the program on the same machine each time they take a quiz. For the same reason, users cannot retake quizzes under the same username on the same computer.

Note for Macintosh users: Due to technical limitations in Internet Explorer 5 Macintosh edition, quiz results for only three users can be saved on any single machine. Once a fourth user logs in, the program will automatically erase the first user's data to allow quiz results for that user's session to be saved. For this reason, Macintosh users, particularly those working with the program in a lab environment, are strongly encouraged to e-mail and/or print their quiz results to ensure their scores are not lost.

The Windows version of the program is not subject to these limitations.

Video Lessons

A Video Lesson is a segment of the program. Students can use the video lessons and quizzes in the order set by the program (default) or in an order created in a custom presentation. Video lessons can also be accessed individually by selecting them from the dropdown menu at the top of the screen.

PC users have the option to view video lessons full screen by clicking the link below the video window. To return to the home page, just hit the "Esc" button on your keyboard.

Learning Guide

The Learning Guide contains helpful material for teachers. Most material is available either through a menu that launches popup windows or from PDFs suitable for printing. A link to Adobe's Web site is also provided for those who may not have a PDF reader. Additional, updated information and resources can be found at the link for "Further Learning."
